Why Does My Washing Machine Smell? Common Causes & Easy Fixes: Appliance Repairs in Leicester

Published on 9 June 2026 at 10:46

A smelly washing machine is a really common problem, and it is usually caused by a build-up of detergent, fabric conditioner, dirt, limescale and bacteria inside the machine.

Even though your washing machine is designed to clean clothes, the inside of the appliance can still become dirty over time — especially if it is mainly used on cooler wash cycles.

Why washing machines start to smell

One of the biggest causes is regular low-temperature washing. Modern detergents work well at lower temperatures, but cooler washes do not always clear grease, bacteria and residue from inside the drum, door seal, dispenser drawer and pipework.

Over time, this can leave a damp, stale smell inside the machine.

Another common cause is using too much detergent or fabric conditioner. More product does not always mean cleaner washing. In fact, excess detergent can build up inside the machine and create a sticky residue where bacteria and mold can grow.

Common places smells come from

The smell may be coming from:

  • The rubber door seal

  • The detergent drawer

  • The softener compartment

  • The filter area

  • The drum

  • Internal hoses and pipework

  • Standing water left inside the machine

The door seal is one of the main areas I check, as it can collect water, lint, hair, small items and black mold. The dispenser drawer is another common place for build-up, especially where fabric conditioner has been used regularly.

How to help stop the smell

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

Leave the door slightly open after a wash so the drum can dry out.

Remove and clean the detergent drawer regularly.

Wipe around the rubber door seal, especially inside the folds.

Avoid using too much detergent or fabric conditioner.

Run an occasional hot maintenance wash to help clear residue from inside the machine.

It is also worth checking and cleaning the filter if your machine has an accessible one, as trapped debris can sometimes contribute to bad smells.

When it may need checking properly

If the smell keeps coming back, or you notice poor draining, water left in the drum, leaks, error codes or unusual noises, there may be another issue that needs looking at.

A blocked filter, restricted drain hose, poor drainage or internal build-up can all cause problems that a simple clean may not fully solve.
