Time to ditch the monthly appliance warranty payments?

A monthly warranty payment for your washing machine might seem small. Add cover for the dishwasher, tumble dryer and oven, and those direct debits can become a sizeable household expense.

For homeowners in Leicester and Leicestershire, there is another option: put money aside and pay a local appliance engineer when a fault actually happens.

If your appliances are out of warranty, paying for repairs as you need them could give you more control over your spending.

How much are your appliance warranties costing you?

Take a look at your direct debits and add up the payments for all your appliance repair plans.

As an illustration, paying £10 a month for each of four appliances would cost:

  • £40 every month

  • £480 every year

  • £1,440 over three years, assuming the payments stay the same

These figures are an example, rather than a quote for a particular policy. But they show how small monthly payments can add up—even during years when your appliances need no repairs.

The useful question is: how much have you paid for cover, and what have you received in return?

Build a repair fund instead

An alternative is to move the amount you would spend on appliance cover into a separate savings account.

That money can then help pay for a repair when you need one. If nothing breaks down, it stays yours. You can also use it towards a replacement if an appliance eventually becomes uneconomical to repair.

There is a trade-off: a fault could happen before you have built up enough savings, and several appliances could fail close together. Paying as you go works best when you can comfortably meet an unexpected bill.

A breakdown does not always mean a new appliance

An oven that stops heating or a washing machine that will not drain can be frustrating, but it does not automatically mean the appliance needs replacing.

Depending on the fault, a repair might involve a heating element, drain pump, door lock or another replaceable component. Diagnosis helps establish what has failed and whether a repair is worthwhile.

Some faults are more expensive, and parts are not always available. The sensible decision depends on the appliance’s age, condition, repair cost and likely remaining life.

Choose a local appliance engineer when you need one

Paying directly for a repair lets you choose the engineer you want to use, subject to their availability and the appliances they cover.

At Leicestershire Appliance Repair, I provide out-of-warranty fault diagnosis and repairs for washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, electric ovens and selected microwaves across West Leicester and surrounding Leicestershire areas.

You can contact me when something goes wrong, check the current service charges and discuss the next step without signing up to an ongoing monthly repair plan.

Check your cover before cancelling

Extended warranties can provide useful peace of mind, particularly if a large repair bill would be difficult to manage. Whether yours offers good value depends on its price, exclusions, any excess and the repair or replacement benefits included.

Before making a change, check:

  • Whether the appliance already has a manufacturer’s guarantee.

  • What your existing plan actually covers.

  • The cancellation terms and any outstanding payment obligations.

  • Whether you have enough savings for an unexpected repair or replacement.

Contact the provider to arrange cancellation under the plan’s terms, rather than simply stopping the direct debit.
