PAT Testing Leicester | Businesses & Landlords

From office computers and kettles to rental property appliances, electrical equipment is part of everyday life. Wear and damage can be easy to overlook, particularly when an appliance still appears to work normally.

At PAT Testing Leicester, I provide a local electrical equipment inspection and testing service for landlords, businesses and community organisations across Leicester and the surrounding areas.

What is PAT testing?

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing. You may also see the service described as Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (ITEE).

It combines visual inspection with appropriate electrical tests. The checks depend on the equipment’s construction and condition: testing alone cannot identify every defect, which is why visual inspection matters.

Who can benefit from PAT testing in Leicester?

Electrical equipment safety matters wherever people use appliances. My service is available for:

- Businesses and offices – computers, monitors, printers and staff kitchen equipment.

- Landlords and letting agents – electrical appliances supplied in rental properties.

- Shops, salons and cafés – equipment used by staff and customers.

- Churches and community venues – appliances used by volunteers, visitors and groups.

Whether you manage a small premises or several properties, discussing the equipment and how it is used helps establish a suitable inspection and testing plan.

What equipment can be checked?

Common examples include kettles, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, desk lamps, computer equipment, extension leads and detachable power cables.

Larger appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers, may also be included where suitable and accessible. When requesting a quote, mention any integrated, hardwired or difficult-to-access equipment so the scope can be agreed beforehand.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

In workplaces, electrical equipment must be maintained to prevent danger. However, UK law does not impose a blanket requirement for annual PAT testing.

Inspection and testing can form part of a suitable maintenance programme. A PAT report supports equipment safety management; it does not, by itself, establish compliance with every obligation.

For landlords, the focus is on maintaining safe appliances supplied to tenants. Equipment testing and an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) cover different things: PAT testing does not replace inspection of a property’s fixed electrical installation.

How often should equipment be tested?

There is no single interval for every appliance. The appropriate frequency depends on the equipment, its use and environment.

Equipment moved frequently or exposed to demanding conditions may need closer attention than equipment kept in a low-risk office. Previous results can also help inform future checks.

What happens during an appointment?

An appointment includes visual inspection and suitable electrical testing where required. Results are recorded, and any failures are explained so you can decide what to repair or replace.

Equipment needs to be accessible, and some items will need to be unplugged. Planning access beforehand helps keep disruption manageable.

If an item is identified as unsafe, stop using it until the problem has been addressed. Continue checking for visible damage between appointments, even when an appliance carries a pass label.
