A microwave that switches on but does not heat food can appear to be working while leaving meals cold. This repair concerned a microwave with a no-heat fault, with a new magnetron shown in the repair photographs below.
At Leicestershire Appliance Repair, I assess selected microwave models and provide advice on whether a repair is practical and worthwhile.
Reported Fault: Microwave Not Heating Food
The reported problem was a lack of heat. When a microwave is not heating, the fault needs to be investigated before deciding which parts are required.
A no-heat symptom does not automatically identify a single failed component. The cause can vary between models, so accurate diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary replacement parts and expense.
A New Microwave Magnetron
The magnetron produces the microwave energy used to heat food. A problem with the magnetron or its supporting circuitry can prevent the appliance from heating.
The photograph below shows the new magnetron for this repair. Choosing a suitable replacement requires checking compatibility with the appliance.
The High-Voltage Capacitor
The second photograph shows the microwave’s high-voltage capacitor and surrounding components.
In this type of microwave, the capacitor forms part of the high-voltage circuit that supplies the magnetron. A fault within this circuit can affect heating, which is why diagnosis needs to consider more than the magnetron alone.
Checking a Microwave After Repair
Completing a microwave repair involves more than fitting a replacement part. Appropriate checks are needed to confirm heating performance and safe operation before returning the appliance to use.
Microwave repairs should be carried out by a suitably competent engineer. Internal components can retain a dangerous electrical charge even when the appliance is unplugged.
