I recently attended a customer’s home in Kirby Muxloe, Leicester, to investigate a Beko integrated dishwasher with a door that had suddenly become extremely heavy and difficult to lower safely.
Integrated dishwasher doors are fitted behind a kitchen cupboard panel, which adds extra weight. Springs and tensioning mechanisms are therefore used to support the door and prevent it from dropping open.
The cause of the heavy dishwasher door
After removing the Beko integrated dishwasher and inspecting the door mechanism, I found that the tension spring on one side had broken.
The spring on the opposite side was still intact, which explained why the door felt unusually heavy and uneven. With only one spring supporting the door, it could drop suddenly when opened, potentially causing damage or injury.
Although the broken spring was the reason for the original call-out, a much more serious problem became apparent when I went to reconnect the dishwasher.
Severe burning around the dishwasher plug and socket
Before plugging the appliance back in, I noticed substantial heat damage and burning around the dishwasher plug and wall socket.
The socket face was badly scorched, and the area around one of the plug pins had clearly experienced severe overheating.
This type of damage may be caused by:

A loose electrical connection

Damage to the plug, cable or internal socket connections
Whatever the cause, it was clear that the Beko dishwasher could not safely be reconnected.
Safety action taken
I cut the burnt plug from the dishwasher cable so that the appliance could not accidentally be plugged back into the damaged socket.
After discussing the condition of the dishwasher and the electrical damage, the owner decided to replace the appliance rather than repair the broken door spring.
They are also arranging for a qualified electrician to inspect the damaged socket, the wiring behind it and the associated electrical circuit before a replacement dishwasher is installed.
Why burnt plugs and sockets should never be ignored
Electrical overheating can develop gradually, especially where a connection has become loose or worn.
A dishwasher is a relatively high-powered appliance and may operate for several hours, including periods when the heating element is drawing a significant electrical load.
Warning signs can include:

Brown or black marks around a plug or socket

Melted or distorted plastic

A burning smell

A plug or socket becoming unusually warm

A burnt socket should never simply be cleaned and reused. The appliance should remain disconnected until the socket and wiring have been inspected and repaired by a qualified electrician.

This visit began as an investigation into a heavy door on a Beko integrated dishwasher. The original fault was a broken door spring on one side, but the severe burning found at the plug and socket was potentially far more serious.
It is an important reminder that appliance repairs are not only about fixing the reported fault. The appliance, power supply and surrounding installation should also be checked for anything that could present a safety risk.
