AEG Washer Dryer Tripping the Electrics
It's a sunny Thursday afternoon in Glen Parva, Leicester where I have just attended an AEG washer dryer where the customer reported that the appliance was tripping the electrics as soon as the washer started the cycle.
When a washing machine or washer dryer trips the electrics, it is important not to guess the cause. There are several possible reasons, including a faulty motor, damaged wiring, suppressor fault, pump issue, or a heating element breaking down to earth.
On this visit, I carried out a thorough fault-finding process to narrow the problem down properly. The appliance was checked carefully and tested in stages, rather than simply replacing parts and hoping for the best.
After robust troubleshooting, the fault was traced to the heating element. Once removed, the problem became clear. The element was heavily contaminated and damaged, which explained why it was causing the customer’s electrics to trip.
A faulty heating element can sometimes work for a while and then fail when it heats up, or it can break down internally and leak current to earth. When this happens, the RCD in the consumer unit may trip as a safety measure.
Once the cause had been confirmed, I ordered the correct replacement heating element for the AEG washer dryer. The new part was then fitted, the appliance was reassembled, and the machine was tested to confirm it was operating correctly without tripping the electrics.
This repair is a good example of why proper diagnosis matters. Electrical tripping faults should always be investigated carefully and safely, as the visible symptom is often only part of the story.
If your washer dryer, washing machine or tumble dryer is tripping the electrics, it is best to stop using it and arrange for it to be inspected before further damage occurs.
